Независимая комиссия, вспомогательное звено федеральной системы уголовного правосудия. В задачи комиссии входит определение правил назначения наказаний [U.S. Sentencing Guidelines], которыми руководствуются при вынесении приговоров федеральные суды [ federal court]. Комиссия также проводит исследования по входящим в ее компетенцию вопросам развития и практики пенитенциарной системы.
